Instagram Post of The Month - APRIL

This month, Instagram Post of The Month is a fun and informative shoot done for Centurion Coffee. Centurion Coffee is a café and coffee roaster located in Guelph, ON that roasts small batches of direct-from-farm coffee beans for a perfect taste every time. There were some incredible photos taken and even more was learned about roasting coffee from their expert staff.

The owners of Centurion wanted some photos of the roasting process to update their website and social media, so they slowly walked through those steps for us to capture. After warming up the roaster to temperature, 30kg of green coffee beans are poured into the top and then fall into the main chamber. While roasting, you can see the green beans tumbling around inside through a tiny porthole on the roaster, and you can notice them changing from green to a bright yellow colour as they roast. A sample tube is removed during the process for the roaster to test and ensure the quality of the roast. Once the beans have reached their desired roast, they fall from the main chamber onto a large grate, where they are cycled around to cool down as air flows through the grates. When the beans are finally cooled down they are collected and stored for a week to allow the beans to aerate. After the roasting concluded, a few products were photographed and then we moved on to the café. They masterfully prepared and Americano as photos were taken of the process and of the shop. All the photos of the roasting and cafe can be viewed in the gallery above.

As always, these photos were taken on a Nikon Z7. The lens used for this shoot was a Nikon 24-70mm f2.8, because of its versatility. Not knowing what the facility would be like, the 24-70 allows you to shoot close details and wider shots even in confined spaces. You also have the low aperture f2.8, so your longer 50-70mm shots still have a nice, isolated subject. Having to shoot fast and efficiently, this was the only gear used for this shoot.

We hope you learned a thing or two about the coffee roasting process and had fun hearing about this exciting shoot. It was a ton of fun visiting the facilities of Centurion Coffee and the smell of the beans roasting was absolutely intoxicating. It is something we hope to shoot more of down the line, so let us know if it's something you would like to see more of.
